Sibiu
Surprising, the historical center of the medieval city Sibiu has succeeded to preserve almost entirely it’s original features. It’s foundation is linked to the Saxon colonization in Transylvania, the city being built on a daco-roman settlement. In 1191, the city was known as Cibinum, but with the annexation of Transylvania to the Austro – Hungarian Empire, the city name was changed to Hermannstadt. There are well preserved buildings, dating from the Habsburg Empire (1699).
Sibiu was considered to be the most powerful city from Transylvania. Narrow streets, typical architectural elements, large squares, magnificent inside walls, well preserved defense towers. After the Tatars invasion in 1241, Sibiu was fortified in several stages, getting to have 39 defense towers and 5 bastions. You can still admire the Soldisch and Haller bastion, the Stairs Tower, Council Tower, the Carpenters Tower, the Gunsmith Tower, Pottery Tower, the Brukenthal Museum and Sibiu city Hall, the Holy Trinity roman-catholic Church (1726-1733). Another touristic attraction is the Evangelical Church (XIV century), built on an old roman basilica. The small square, the Huet square, the arts museums, The arts House, Luxembourg House, the Bridge of Lies, make of Sibiu an ideal place.
Balea Lake
The glacial lake Balea is at 2040 m altitude in the Fagaras mountains, wich is part of the Carpathian mountains. From 1932 the Balea Lake and the surrounding areas wore declared scientific areas. With 360 m in lenght and 11,35 m in depth, the Balea Lake is a glacial lake, where in 2006 was built for the first time in Eastern Europe an ice hotel, in the shape if an igloo with 16 guest rooms .
