Peles Palace
In 1866 the prince Carol of the Hohenzollern – Sigmaringen arrives to Romania to claim the throne. He choses Sinaia to build the royal residence. Today the summer residence of the royal family, Peles Castle is considered to be the most beautiful from Europe. It was the first castle with elevator and own heating and warm water system from the north-eastern Europe. Having 65 rooms with different renascentist styles (swiss, german, english, spanish, italian and austrian), in Peles Castle you can see famous paintings / sculptures.
The stained glass, chandeliers, china, furniture, mirrors, sculptures, carpets all together make of Peles Castle something unique and impressive.The construction of the castle started in 1873-1875 by the austrian architect Wilhelm Doderer, but finished by an czech architect Karel Liman (also the builder of Pelisor Castle) in 1914. You will encounter here different architectural styles which will captivate you.
Targoviste Fortress
The archeological diggings show that Targoviste fortress was populated since neolithic. Officialy, the fortress is dated since 1369, when the ruler Nicolae lost the battle with the vallachian lord Vlaicu – Voda. Another attestation is in 1396, by the crusader Johann Schiltberger, who visited Targoviste city before the Nicopole battle with the Ottoman Empire. Under the reign of Mircea cel Batran, Targoviste becames capital city. The Chindia Tower was built by Vlad Tepes and it still great, even today. Targoviste fortress had an important role in Vlad Tepes reign as the most important fortress from all Vallachia. The legend says that Vlad Tepes was buried beneath this monastery in big secret, so that the turks won’t find it. They say that in the center of the fortress Vlad Tepes built a fountain to be used by the travellers, locals and the needing ones. To drink wather from this fountain, the ruler placed there a golden cup. Nobody dared to drink water with the cup because of the fear to be impaled. The chronicles from the Ottoman Empire say that even after 100 years after Vlad Tepes death, the golden cup was still there, beside the fountain. The Targoviste fortress and the Chindia Tower form a beautiful place surrounded by stories and mistery.
