Fagaras Mountains Tour – The Romanian legacy in Transylvania

Transfagarasan road

When you return from vacation and think of Romania, these are the places you’ll remember as the real Romania, especially the Fagaras Mountains in the Transfagarasan area! On this trip, you’ll get some history (and I’ll let you in on some history in the making), one of our great mysteries, and a tradition that most Romanians don’t even know about! The road is open only during May till October.

Balea Lake

Located at 2034 meters high, it’s the higher glacier lake in Romania and to get here we take the “Transfagarasan” highway through the Fagaras Mountains, the highest and largest of Romania. Transfagarasan road was a challenge to build and it’s a challenge now for both the car and driver.

Lipizzaner Horse Stables

Lipizzaner horses are a unique breed of horses that started in the 16th Century from the combination of 5 different breeds of horses. The royal horse stables from Sambata de Jos were established in 1874 by count Johannes of Brukenthal. For over a century, in Sambata de Jos village people have been breeding the pure blood Lipizzaner type. The climate and the terrain was favorable to breed them as they need special care. Approximately 300 horses are breaded and trained in Sambata de Jos village.

Brancoveanu Monastery – Sambata de sus Stables

The orthodox monastery Brancoveanu was built in 1657 and is considered one of the most beautiful monastery from Transylvania.Located at the base of the Fagaras mountains, in a breathtaking landscape, the monastery catch the eye though simplicity and marvelous architecture, one of the most impressive buildings of XVII century, very representative in the greek orthodox religion. The initial building was made of wood, and between 1696 – 1707, at the wish of Valah Constantin Brancoveanu who was the ruler at that time, has been built the brick church.Since then has passed through multiple renovations and expansions until has reached the actual form,in 1946, in the time of King Mihai I of Romania, whose portrait can be found inside the church.
