In Romania there are other types of mud vulcanoes, like the ones in Ocna Sibiu, Homorod, Bazna, but those are different from the ones in Buzău. The volcanoes are situated on two mountain slopes, called Paclele Mari and Paclele Mici, from Buzău county. They emerged as a result of earth’s magma. The natural gases, located at over 3000 meters depth, in contact with the clay soil, cross the groundwater, creating through this process the mud volcanoes. The mud that comes from 3000 meters deep is very liquid, being strongly pushed by the natural gases. The area has the appearance of the moon’s surface, a scene out of science-fiction movie. Hovewer, it is a fascinating landscape, beautiful, but at the same time, terrifying. The heat of the sun creates huge cracks in the wet soil. Incredibly important, from a geological and botanical point of view, the natural reserve of the mud volcanoes in Buzău has it’s own flora and fauna, depicted by a diversity of protected plants and animals, declared monuments of nature!

Urlătoarea Waterfall
Urlătoarea Waterfall, from Vama Buzăului, is the perfect place to walk on water. The access to the waterfall, and towards the waterfall is splendid, enriched by beautiful valleys, winding roads, with houses built according to the local traditions and animals running on the hills or in the gardens, everything encompassed in a fairy tale, an almost virgin scenery. The waterfall’s streams burst directly from the mountain, creating a unique show. The water smashes on the rocks, pouring into the Urlătoarea stream. This geological formation surprises through its unique alignment, spread over a few dozen linear meters, painting the cliffs with acid water, into a martial red. The sound of the water resembles that of a scream or a yell, and the legends tell that sounds come from the witches that used to dwell here, hundreds of years ago. The water that falls from the streams creates waterfalls and ramps in its falling. The water from the cascade has curative properties and it’s extremely clean, as much as the surrounding air. Regardless of the season, the water maintains a constant temperature of approximately 12o grades Celsius.
